“With the support of a school designer and other Expeditionary Learning faculty, this paying attention insures that limited staff development time and resources are not perceived as token add-ons or sporadic events.... It means taking risks, challenging old assumptions, and making our struggles more public, knowing that the end result will prove that what we do is in the best interests of our students and ourselves.”
-Angela Jolliffe, Expeditionary Learning Regional Director

Costs and Financing EL

Expeditionary Learning's cost for a full set of services averages $65,000 per year for the first five years, and $25,000 per year after that. The size of the contract depends on the number of direct service days provided and travel costs for EL staff. Many schools apply for and receive federal Comprehensive School Reform (CSR) grants to help with the first three years, and other federal, state and local funding to carry on continuous improvement. A number of schools finance the work from their professional development budgets.

In addition, schools allocate $15,000-$20,000 a year in additional funds to cover stipends paid teachers on days they are engaged in professional development; travel to regional and national professional development and for board and lodging for regional programming and for the National Conference. Other national professional development offerings such as summits, institutes and Outward Bound educator courses are residential, with EL covering most board and lodging costs.
